The Piano..

The piano is one of the most common instruments people learn to play. Whether you play the piano for its romanticism, the beauty of the pieces that can be played, or because your parents are forcing you to do it , you need to keep in mind that playing an instrument requires hard work and dedication.

The standard piano is made up of 88 black and white keys. While a keyboard follows the same basic rules you use to play the piano, keyboards often have less keys and achieve a different sound. Nevertheless, if you have to get something smaller due to your current living accommodations, a keyboard will suffice for basic learning purposes and practicing requirements.

Tips on Playing Piano by Ear

Listening to piano music is fun; playing music is more fun; playing music by ear is the most fun of all. If the player remembers the music he is playing by means of his ear, he is playing by ear. But most players who have learned to play by the traditional method of reading notes on a page and then punching keys on an instrument do not trust to their ears to tell them what is coming next. Instead, they remember the notes by name or by their chord name, or they have a visual memory of how the notes look on the page, or they use some other nonmusical system of recall. Naturally this turns their attention from the sound of the music and encourages the habit of watching keenly the mechanics of playing with almost total disregard for the music itself.

What is Chord "Voicing"?

"Voicing" has nothing to do with using your voice, it is a technical term that refers to the way in which notes of a chord are arranged.

For example, you know the "C" chord is made up of 3 notes C, E, and G correct? But those 3 notes can be arranged in a variety of ways. We could have C on the bottom of the chord, or we could have E on the bottom of the chord, or we could have G on the bottom of the chord. Those are inversions, and we dealt with those a couple issues ago.

But we could also space the notes differently. We could have C on the bottom of the chord, skip the E, and have G come next, with E on top. That is called "open voicing" because there is an "opening" between the various notes of the chord. Chords that don't have any openings are called "closed".

Find a dealer that has a large selection of new and used pianos at various prices. It is important that you sample or have the salesperson demonstrate a wide variety of pianos. When you play each piano, discover which piano keyboard has the touch most responsive to your fingers.
